An audit partner of the firm’s assurance service practice, Mike is also a CVA (Certified Valuation Analyst), allowing him to see what drives the value of his clients’ business. As the partner in charge of recruiting, Mike has a significant opportunity to get the most talented people he can for Gunnip. The firm’s low turnover rate is both a draw for potential team members and a testament to Mike’s ability to find the right people.
Mike thrives during one of the busiest times of the year for accountants - tax season. Likewise, he enjoys the relationships he has built with his clients throughout the year. Whether he is solving problems, answering questions, or helping clients deal with unforeseen challenges, Mike finds the work gratifying, “It’s the most demanding, dynamic and enjoyable time,” he says. His recent accomplishments include:
- Facilitating a client’s $1 million business deal in which he provided an estimated range of value, and recommended specific financing options resulting in significant savings.
- Initiating the consolidation and redesign of financial statements for a client with multiple businesses.
- Developing a consistent reporting process for a client experiencing a transition of ownership. Mike evaluated and adjusted the financial reporting process for his clients who now have a better picture of their entire financial situation throughout the year.
Mike is a member of the Board of Directors for Girls Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, sitting on the finance and executive committees. He is the past Treasurer and Board member of the American Lung Association of Delaware. He is a member of St. John the Beloved Parish in which he served as chair of the school’s Development committee and coached the boys track team. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, outdoor activities like running or biking, and reading financial books or autobiographies.
Mike has presented on a number of topics including valuations, audits and reviews. He enjoys working with clients that have an entrepreneurial spirit. “Our clients are more sophisticated and are going to make things happen because they’re always looking for new ideas,” he says. The opportunity to be an instrumental partner in his clients’ business brings him the greatest satisfaction.
